Polyurea Coating Technology

Wins Innovation Prize at Polyurethanes ConferenceWednesday, October 12, 2011 More items for Coatings Technology

Baton Rouge, La.-based Albemarle Corp’s “breakthrough” color-stable spray-coating technology received the 2011 Innovation Award at the Polyurethanes Technical Conference, hosted by the Center for the Polyurethanes Industry (CPI) in Nashville, Tenn.

The coating utilizes the company’s ETHACURE® 90, a new aliphatic curative that is reported to improve the processing of polyurea spray elastomer coating systems. Albemarle developed the coating in partnership with LINE-X Protective Coatings.

The technology’s UV and color stability facilitates color strength without the need for an additional topcoat, and offers low VOC content, the company says.

The company added that the coating’s durability and performance were put to the test as the protective coating on Dominator 1, a vehicle featured during the 2011 season of Discovery Channel’s Storm Chasers.

Albemarle chemist Dr. Paul Wiggins was also recognized at the CPI conference with the “Best Presentation Award” in the CASE (Coatings, Adhesives, Sealants & Elastomers) Technical Session for his paper, “New Developments in Aliphatic Polyurea Coatings.” The paper was submitted and co-authored by Terry Pe (LINE-X), Thalan Burris (Albemarle), Sam Lane (Albemarle) and Dustin Le (Horn). //CPI announced the list of winners for each technical session and poster category based on votes from session and conference attendees.

In addition to Dr. Wiggins’ award, the 2011 Best Paper Award winners include the following.
